Butch Speedy and Micky
Well I got a surprise visit from an eccentric trio of relatives yesterday. Butch my uncle, Speedy (Dad\Butches cousin), and Micky my great Uncle were driving through town! They were in the interior to visit Denali before driving down to see Kenai and then back to Haines to take the ferry back to Juneau.
As luck would have it Uncle Micky got sick on the trip and wasn't doing well when they got into town so he laid pretty low and recovered on a strict diet of vanilla ice cream and no chicken (he said he'd been throwing up chicken and poopin' chicken so when we suggested having it for dinner last night he wasn't interested).
Butch had been sick but was feeling up to an adventure so the three of us went and did the only thing not worth missing out on in this town, the Chatanika gold dredge. Below are some pictures Speedy took. According to Wikipedia "Gold dredge #3 was owned and operated by F.E. Company between 1928 and 1958." (So If Dave Parish ever come to town to visit me I'll be forced to take him to it as well, check out the belt driven grinder and drill press or the 40 foot long rock tumbler i'm standing in and tell me you're not interested.)
After we got back, as chicken wasn't on the menu, I made the guys some of my primo bachelor chow: moose burger, coconut milk, red cabbage, avocado, and bell peppers all cooked down together. They wanted something bready so I broiled a loaf of garlic bread for them. It was good enough for me to talk them into doing the dishes so well worth the effort as the kitchen is cleaner now than we they arrived, (thanks again guys).
Butch is the one with the hat on, and speedy had the camera the whole trip so his picture is one that was left over on his camera from visiting his latest grand-daughter in California and Micky is as he put it "the old fart in the picture." All very nice guys and I'm sorry they had to leave so soon.
